Hello Poets:

Some questions have been raised about our Haiku-10 contest. Since I suggested a traditional 5-7-5 stanza form for the traditional seventeen syllables, questions were asked about contentshould the haiku be focused on nature/seasons etc. Or, is the more personal senryu acceptable(a focus on human attributes). And what is the difference between haiku and senryu anyway? If it makes anyone feel bettereven the American Haiku Society has been challenged with this question.

They often use the following criteria in judging English-language haiku (they identify "three content categories"):

Nature haiku
Human haiku (senryu),
Human plus nature haiku (hybrids).

I have noticed that we, at Alberts Caf are using this definition of Haiku:

What are Haikus you may ask?

Haikus by definition are: a form of Japanese poetry which states in three lines of five, seven, and five syllables a

1.) clear picture designed to arouse a

2.) distinct emotion and suggest a

3.) spiritual insight.

So, it makes sense to follow this definition as our base.

!Nowhere is a little secret---

 yes, judging will be on whether the traditional 5-7-5 stanza is being used;

 yes, judging will be based on Alberts Caf Haiku definition;

 yes, judging will determineare all the 10 words accounted for and are they in the right place?

 And, yesjudging will take into account nature vs. human qualities etc

BUTthe real focus concerning the judging of our haiku 10 is the successful use of chaining. The best Haiku chains will be acknowledged! And I have a strong feeling this is not going to be so easy to choose the bestit may be that they are all the best!

Have funthat is the most important thing. And dont forget the mantra for the weekch-ch-ch-chaiiiiin!
