Stories, essays and poems:

We all have prejudices and biases- cultural, religious, familial, educational. We judge people on the clothes they wear, the cars they drive, the jobs they do, what accent they speak with where they go to school, what they do for hobbies. It takes reflection and humility to overcome these biases. I am looking for a story from your own life, no matter your age or background, about a time you were wrong and misjudged someone.

Maybe you thought a woman dressed in Kenyan tribal dress could not possibly be a doctor. A man speaking Spanish to his mother, does not also know English. A boy who prefers his own company does not have social skills or empathy. A kid with autism could not be prom king. A young woman could not be a champion video game designer. A woman who was a different religion from you had nothing to teach you. Etc.

Show me humility, show me how you misjudged. Think about the why. What did you do? Did anything about you change? Did you encounter the incident in your own family/ neighborhood, when you went away for the first time, when you traveled to a foreign country?

I literally do not have a cent to my name. Winners will be published and promoted on my professional writer blog site and on my Facebook writer's pages. Have fun!
