The Recreating the "Gothic" Contest March 2, 2010 - January 15, 2011
Reading and Deliberating
Details Gothic Literature began in 1764 with the introduction of Walpole's "The Castle of Ontrato" to the public mainstream. It's consequece? The very origin of "Pulp" Fiction. This novella, completely horrific for its time, inspired a chain of writers; Ann Radcliffe, Matthew Lewis, Mary Shelly, Charlotte and Emily Bronte, Edger Allen Poe, Joseph Sheridan Le Fenu, Bram Stoker, writer's between, and writer's since to produce Romantic works that contained the prenatural elements of fear, terror, and horror. These works of the "sublime" are the foundations of the modern horror genres.
Write a short story, no more than 10,000 words, that contains the elements of Gothic-Romance as they were known from 1764 to 1895 (with extension; Gothic Lit actually went out according to scholars in the 1830's). You should place these elements in a modern setting without ripping off Anne Rice, so please be as original as possible. I will edit the winner of this contest, and suggest were revisions should be made. I will then find for the contest winner the proper Magazines and Publishing Companies that they should submit this work too upon adhering to my suggestions, if any. I look forward to helping the lucky winner of this contest get established a publication. Note: PLEASE PLACE YOUR STORY IN ONE OF THESE GENRES: MYSTERY-SUSPENSE-THRILLER, HORROR, OR ROMANCE. Only the first 25 contestents will be accepted. Disclaimer: No promises of being published. But we'll give a try as I have access to a database with every publishing company in the world.
