Details

From the early 60's to the mid 70's, there was a movement in poetry from Beat to the Black Arts Movement, that transformed the art form. Many of its originators are now professors of literature at major universities. In this movement, there were 2 types of mostly urban poetry - uplifting, catalysts for social change, and downpressing - misogynistic, racist, homophobic.

Sadly, much urban poetry (esp. rap) has taken the same sharp left turn, and focused on the sexual, the hard, the pointless. It is time to reclaim the art form, time to write for social change, time to make a damn difference.

Write 1 or 2 poems that are modern in style, reminiscent of those proponents of change (examples here). It's not about any race, or any sex, it's about being a voice for the oppressed, being a voice for social change. If not you....?

Winner gets $20, which in the 60's was a lot of money. Quit complaining.
