Voice Development part 1

Voice Development part 1

A Lesson by Camille Corbett
"

It's time to get down to business!

"

In order to understand what we are trying to accomplish in this little segment, let's define what the hell "voice" is!

Voice:
1.The author's style, the quality that makes his or her writing unique, and which conveys the author's attitude, personality, and character.

2.Voice is the characteristic speech and thought patterns of a first person narrator; a persona. Because voice has so much to do with the reader's experience of a work of literature, it is one of the most important elements of a piece of writing.

Okay for lesson one, I want you to define in your own words, what you think voice is and write a paragraph that you think best exhibits your voice. Leave it as a comment or message it to me. I will tell you whether you are on the right track or not. So for now, chao dearies!

Voice is my own unique style across all things that I write. My POV including the words, topics, and my unique rhythm. It’s not forced, or really definable; it’s my personality on the page. To know me is to read me.

My voice is a means of expressing my thoughts and feelings upon the backdrop of reality. Sometimes my voice is loud at other times it is silent. It can be soft or sinister but it is always expressive.

“My reality glistens like the sweat off a corpse in the middle of the Nevada desert as my consciousness slowly climbs out of the shadow world. I stumble upstairs as if drunk on despair before the amnesia resides and I fully realize who I am or what time it is. These maybe the days of swine and roses but the gods needn’t be so cruel. I cautiously peer out the sliding glass window with a bit of suspicion and a loaded gun, counting slowly to myself. Three, Two, One, SHOWTIME!!!”-This is my voice of suspicion.

“The teacher tries to spice up their learning experience by eating a banana in a slow seductive manner. The rest of the boys eye her up like a starving man eyes a leg of lamb but I remember Eve that b***h that tricked Adam and as far as I’m concerned, the only good w***e is a dead w***e!” -This is my voice of anger.

“The darkness wraps itself tightly around him like the arms of an octopus squeezing the very life force from his body. The eternal silence is all he has left and it has become deafening. He bleeds from every orifice of his body that is, what’s left of his body. He will die soon but before that happens he will repent for a life of sin. To bad for him God is not listening.” -This is my voice of despair.

“In the darkness that is my hour I find little solace in heaven or hell. Alone I wonder through the vast social wastelands and mindscapes, forever the hunt. I live only for the day to hear her scream and taste her heart once more.” -This is my voice of sinister.

“Her body speaks to me in the tongue of the ancient lovers and tells me of her wants, needs and desires. She is warm and wet, the fever of her longing resides deep inside her and our embrace is the kinship of the flesh. It is the union of heaven and hell in the brothels of lust, London after midnight.” -This is my voice of desire.

“In the blackest of night envy has been freed, jealously told and anger felt. High above in the rafters hides sadness and decay. Born in the rubble of the past are the children of the Dragon Eagle.” -This is my voice of cryptic symbols.

“His eyes are like diamonds that have been smashed by reality. The horse head speaks as if he has something to say but no words come out, just toxic drool. His body is flying through the aythers at the speed of light as his mind erupts into an endless sea of orgasm. The pounding in his chest is so intense it cracks his ribs and then his heart stops.” -This is the voice of addiction.

My voice of happiness? Well, hope and happiness are hard to come by and reveal themselves to me only on rare occasions. My voices are loudest when expressing addiction, anger, despair, death and more recently desire.

Voice, Is the flavor of my experiences, how I view the world around me, filtered back through the morality I have defined for myself. Like ingrediants to a stew, experiences, interpritation,
intuition, are mixed with what I believe , then left to simmer in thought until a voice is formed.

Voice, it is how we all speak. It is great in wiritng to express how you speak, but I don't like adding a lot of "well" or "so" that much. It just sounds bad, but by talking normally without adding unnessasary words, one may express them self freely in gracefully flowing writing. Everybody speaks differently, likewise, we should all write differently without copying others' styles.

i think voice is the way you write or the style you write. I just learned to write my stories in the past tense, I been writing in the present tense, and this is good for screen plays not novels or stories. let me know if i am right.
