Your Characters.

Characters

Characters, in my opinion, are the most important thing in the story. You can have your plot, setting, all your ideas written down... But without characters, there's no story. You will want to get inside your characters head, be the character, feel the character, and see the character.

Is it a boy or girl? Green or blue eyes? How many main characters are there? Those are simple questions that will start it off. There are main characters and stand-by characters. All of the characters are very important in the story, because somehow, someway they will influence the main character, even if it's just a store filled with shoppers.

The name of your character is very, very important. Even if you have the full story in first-character, he/she will still need a name. If you can't think of a name, then I would use a name that won't be the name forever, you can change it in the future.

Some things you'll want to look at for your build of the character are;

Name, Age, Job, Appearance, Residence. If you are writing about a little girl, or a teenage boy, the job might not need to come into the story, unless they are a servent.

Favorite color, Friends, Favorite food, Phobias, Ethnicity, Religion. These are also important, but not totally necissary unless they will come into the story later on.

Pets, Faults, Drinking patterns, Hobbies. Again, not necissary, but important if the come into the story. For the pets, maybe the MC wants to have a small puppy, but can't because her parents don't trust her. A prime example for drinking patterns is, is the MC an alcoholic? If so, how much do they drink a day?

Single/Married, Children? If you are writing about someone between the ages of 1-18 (younger if that's how your story is based), children and marriage won't be a problem, and will be uncalled for.

These are a few things you'll want to get started on, to get inside your characters head. To let your reader understand what is going on with the character(s), you have to understand them better then they understand themselves. Characters have their own personality. They do what they want to do. You, as a writer, just put it down on paper and show the world what they can do.

Posted 13 Years Ago Can't believe I'm asking for an advice from someone as young as you... haha... Anyway, any advice on how to name characters? I've ideas on how or what my characters would be but I'm having trouble creating their names. Any advice would be nice, if you have any... BTW great lesson...
