Third step: Make a running gag funny without using it.

The third and final step in making a running gag.

Now this step is one that I strongly recommend using.

Now what you need to do is creatively not use your running gag.

You need to build your readers up to it so they know that its coming and then BAM don't use it.

This will be funny, I promise.

Here is an example (I'm sticking with the British lady).

The British lady meets someone knew.

The man looks like he is about to ask her a question. (Now your audience is expecting the running gag to be here)

The British lady says "Yes I'm from England!"

The man says "Well of course you are. What was I supposed to think you were talking in that accent just because you thought it was funny?"

See I didn't use the running gag which was not only a relief to the readers but funny because they thought it was coming.
