To Outline or Not to Outline

Outlining.

Outlining

          Many authors love to outline. They need to have an idea of where they are going. For some people this will help. Not me. Though I do have my own version.

          I take a 70 page spiral notebook and use it to write the novel in.

          I can take the notebook with me everywhere I go. In the bathtub, lying in bed, or waiting for my niece to go into school during the week.

          I’ve tried outlining and it doesn’t work for me. It’s too structured. To me writing should be what comes from within. Take Laurell K. Hamilton (my favorite author of all time!). Ms. Hamilton uses Post its and outlines. I like not knowing what’s coming. (when I do, I write it down) and I like trying to make the story cohesive without those things.

          For me the notebook is my outline.
