So i'm writing a story from the POV of a woman who's son was taken away. she is a black woman and my whole stroy is about racism. I need some help about the sorts of words and names i should use. what did black people call white people? and vice versa? what names are good for the 60's? what sort of things happened etc. I need to do as much research as possible before i start. thanks x

names: for whites, traditional names with conventional spellings were the most common. nancy, bill, bob, sarah, stanley, pamela, etc etc... for blacks, again, a lot of traditional names, but some older southern names were also in there. the name Leroy was almost a stereotype for blacks at that time (and not appreciated). that was also the time when Black Muslims were starting out, so some of the more radical blacks took muslim names. there were no african sounding names with creative spellings, like shaquille, tenikwa, etc. that's a more modern phenomenon.
i can't speak for the black population, but the most common word used for blacks in the early 60s was 'colored' by the middle 60s when the civil rights movement was in full swing, the word 'negro' was much preferred. eventually, "black" or "afro-american" became the acceptable terminology. also, the 'n' word was, of course, always in bigots vocabulary, but it was NOT commonly used among blacks. that, also, is a modern thing. there was a lot going on in the 60s, so depending on what your plot involves, you might want to check out things about civil rights marches, freedom riders, black panthers, black muslims, the naacp, sclc, and whatever else these things may lead you to. |

Is there any chance you would know any rude names (or not so rude) that the black people would call the white people? thanks so much again x now i can crack on with my story! xxxxx |
