I need your opinion, please :)

Posted 1 Year Ago

Hello, im new to this site, so maybe this has been brought up before, but i just want to make sure on something that's been on my mind, for years.

I'm about to start a whole new story, set on planet Earth, but with some major environmentally changes. The idea is that a great gate was found somewhere on earth, in year 2100, and as the gate got activated, all sorts of things crossed over from somewhere else, making the environment change drastically..

My question is, should i start my book with some sort of introduction to what has happened to the planet as we know it now, and til the story sets place?? Or should i just jump right in, and let the readers learn about it, along the way?

And if i put an "intro" in, is it even a good idea? or would it kill the book?

Hoping to some good replies from you guys! :)

I say, definitely jump right in. Being that it's still Earth, most people will be able to pick up on things quickly. A lot of stories are ruined (in my opinion), when the author begins oh a lengthy introduction/infodump.
If you really feel that you must explain, hold off until the second chapter or so. If you play it right you can have your readers excited and itching for answers and by the time they get there they'll actually be interested in what you have to say.

Im inclined to agree with the person above. I recommend looking at some 'post apocalyptic' set books and how they start off. it may provide a good insight into what beginning you might want.

however the best thing to do is jump right in, follow your imagination. stay writing til you  cant move your hand lol. The give it a read over and from there you can see things you didnt like or things you may change.

best of luck.

I think for your first draft, you can just jump right in and see how it works.  You can always change it in the second, third...tenth draft!

Good luck!!!

Yeah I was having a similar problem for my story I'm working on right now. So I wrote a small intro/prologue introducing the major 'theme' in the story. It was simple and short but it got to the point and ended with a hook.

As for jumping into your story right away I agree with that. If you go into information overload right away you might get discouraged. plus its really good to "work" with your character first and start to get him or her down (their emotions, characteristics, etc.). Then you may be able to put more strength into the whole info thing. Hope this helped. Good Luck.
