Most of my information comes from either college courses in Criminal Justice or from books I have purchased. Through my courses I have talked to a couple of police officers about policies and procedures as well as prosecutors and defense attornies. Right now I am involved in a volunteer community action board with adult probation and parole and it gives me the opportunity to go on ride-a-longs and interact with the parole officers.

One excellent resource for anything police or investigations is the book Practical Homicide Investigation: Tactics, Procedures, and Forensic Techniques Fourth Edition by Vernon Geberth. It's considered the bible of homicide investigations and has been the most helpful book on police procedures and what really happens compared to what the movies make us believe.

Another book I find useful is the Crime Classification Manual by Douglas, Burgess, and Ressler. This book seperates various crimes into categories based on motive, method, and offense and includes several case studies on offenders.

I love detail and I enjoy getting it right in a story; these are the ways that have worked for me.
