So I've just started a story I'm really excited about writing, but I keep re-thinking and re-writing the first chapter. What do you do when you can't decide on which way to start your story?

What do you do when you can't decide on which way to start your story? Write what part of the story you have now. Writing isn't a performance art - no one cares HOW you get the story finished, as long as it gets finished. If you aren't happy with the beginning but you have a really cool idea for a scene that happens later on, write that part now, and come back to the beginning when you have a better idea of what you want to do with it. You may even discover that the problem with the beginning was that you were trying to start the story in the wrong place (I do that all the time), and working on later parts first may help you find the right start to get you to that point. |

Sounds like you need to get to grips with story structure - one of the best websites for this is http://www.clickok.co.uk/index4.html and the related youtube channel is awesome: http://www.youtube.com/user/clickokdotcodotuk
Good Luck. |

Write it without worrying about it to get it done, then, once you get past it and have the rest of/more of the story figured out and written, go back and start editing it. You'll be surprised how well that works sometimes.
Or do a break down/story outline of the things you want to happen. It helps me to write a rough outline of my plot before I ever actually start work on it. Remember that a good introduction draws the reader in and makes them interested in your story; go read some of your favorite books and see how those authors do it. |

I had this problem when I started. Ultimately, what I did, was I learned to write past it. This isn't like a work in the films industry where it's one-and-done, you can ALWAYS come back to it. In fact, that is an entire point in novel-writing in that you start and finish the story, then go back and read and revise the whole thing. Just because it's been finished doesn't mean you are done. Write your way through it, then come back and see what you can do later. Often times, you'll find your initial direction changes to something much different as the story goes along, and you can write something that will best suit what you have then.

What do you do when you can't decide on which way to start your story? I just think of what I would do if I was for, example, 'supernatural'. What character I'll be, what I would say, what would I think and more. |
