Is Poetry Dead?

Posted 1 Year Ago

It seems like any famous poetry that pertains to the current time is either depressing or "spiritual". It has gotten to the point to when I think poetry I think of those coffee shops where everyone is snapping their fingers to some "deep" poetry that was really just a bunch of words said in a melodramatic tone. Tell me there is still hope. Show me poetry that was written in the last ten years and still stirs thoughts in my brain. Prove that the world hasn't destroyed poetry.

I might quote a few of mine. I think they're good; but I'm still very amateur. While it's true that Poetry is not what it used to be, there's always hope (Althought it's apparent that good poetry is a dying breed). Here's one of my all-time favorites written by Philip L Body Jr. (Probably just a few years back) titled "Lo Siento"

I took
two erasers from
your box by
the easel.

I needed
them for class.
Lo siento,
mí hermano.

I make
mistakes.

I used to rhyme, and somewhere over the years it evolved.

Now I am blending my verse w/ multimedia I create and music that I have permissions from musicians to use. Often I actually write the verse to them - such as this one:  http://www.writerscafe.org/writing/doodler222/937482/

I think, if it rhymes or not - is not as important as if it stirs and touches you.

But I don't really consider myself a writer, I only know that I like to write...

Do you read what you write?! People are all the same, they wait and wait and wait for someone to come along and do the job for them, why not step up the plate? That's what the REAL men in history did. Each and every poet found their inner muse, a style that fitted them, and wrote something "deep". Raise the bar and find that in yourself! And don't be afraid to borrow from others, you can take a step further even but I won't go there. By the way, I wrote something for you, it's called Hero, I was inspired.

Hero

The people have lost their will to live,
But they say they can make it out of their dark hole,
If only they had a hero.

All day they pray in the burning sun,
To a god who seems not to listen.
But the sun is setting, they need to go home,
The dark is growing darker, the sky is growing black.

One man steps in front of the rest, in his eyes determination, fire and ice.
He exclaims, "I'll be a hero!"
The man looks around coolly,
No one cheers, no one jeers,
Their stance is icy cold,
They don't move.

The man steps back into the crowd,
His fire is extinguished,
Only the ice remains in the his gaze,
Just like the rest of 'em.

Yes, poetry is dead.

I wouldn't say poetry is dead at all it is constantly taking on new shapes and adding new elements into the mix but most of the best poetry is underground in subcultures like Spoetry and other cutting edge concepts. So poetry lives.

If you want thought provoking, read some of my stuff. If I get around to posting what I consider one of my better works (after I get the rights back) I believe it will stir a little action in the brain pan.

going to a writing site and asking if poetry is dead is like going to church and asking if God is dead.

Poetry, in my opinion, is very much alive. I recently went to the southbank centre's poetry convention and that showed that poetry still brings together people of all ethnicities and both genders and allows people to have a voice. I write poetry for myself and have written hundreds of poems, the ones I have on here are simply a sample and they are poems for the sake of poems rather than an expression of my feelings- like a diary. If poetry is still evolving and can still express emotion and bring people together, then it is not just a living force but it is a force for good!

While the man who stated "Going to a poetry site and asking if poetry is dead is like going to church and asking if God is dead" seemed to being saying this in a negative connotation - I agree with him. But only because I think, especially in the times we live in now, asking if God is dead is a perfectly valid and important question; one which absolutely has merit.

Personally, I have wondered this myself. For me, the poets like Walt Whitman, Sylvia Plath, Anne Sexton, Frank O'Hara, (Max Blagg to some extent) - These were poets. They wrote poems. Bursting, frighting, jarring, morning-after-uncomfortable, birth-of-your-first-child-joyous, exhilarating, breath taking, art full poems.

And what do we have today that compares?

Pop culture has replaced art, and while of course those who are involved in the art form itself are going to vehemently defend it - what we really need to ask is "Is poetry relevant?" Many would say no. I think the writing community needs to address this and really confront it in the way they see their art form rather than sitting around and pining about the "Lost days or yore..."

I think art in general is at a very threatened place, and has been for some time. As I said - Pop culture has replaced art. But then again, Andy Warhol is seen as one of the greats, right along side da Vinci. Along Rembrandt. So I also think that there is a greater issue of evolving the art form to make it relevant. The un-importance of the arts is a reflection of the modern values of the world culture that we live in. Intellectualism is no longer valued the way it was in the past. We are a culture of progress, of possessions, of the tangible. Poetry does not generally fit well into this value system.

In summary - No. Poetry is not dead. It is wounded. It is bleeding on the side of the road. It may need a pros(e)thetic leg or two in order to make some faster-than-evolution-can-provide adaptations - but it is most definitely not dead.

No, it never has been and never will.  While we have wonderful tools such as social media to show everyone our writing, it makes it difficult for truly great pieces to stand out.  I'm not a fan of 'the classics', I don't even really like other people's poetry.  I write for myself, not for page views or reviews telling me how awesome I am.

Most of the reason 'the classics' are classic is because they had very little competition in their day.  Websites such as this will allow you to wade through as much poetry as you can sink your teeth into, and sometimes that's not a good feeling.  Obvious cliches stick out more than ever, but good poetry does indeed exist.

Honestly there's so many good poems out there these days that shatter 'the classics'(in my opinion), they're just much more difficult to find.
