Creating a star system for a fantasy setting

Posted 1 Year Ago

Hi

I'm new to the process of writing fiction. Currently I am in the process of world building for a series of fantasy writings (stories and maybe novels). I figured this was the closest match to a place where I could get inputs on a few of my ideas.

I am using the StarGen program to generate a few star systems which look interesting to me. However I need to figure out what sort of skies will my World have. I think my problem would be clearer with a few specific examples.

1. The World orbits around one of the Sol like stars in a binary system. In such a case how would they be visible? One will of course be approximately as big as the sun but I'm not sure about the other one. Would it be an extra bright star? Or would it be the size of the moon? Would it be visible during the day? What if the World also had a moon of its own?

2. Suppose the World is a moon of a jovian/subjovian planet... I am assuming it would look like the moon except bigger. However the tidal forces on the world should be huge in that case right?

It would be of immense help if some scientifically oriented person (maybe some science fiction writers) could explain this to me in simple terms. Alternatively pointing me towards some appropriate resource would be pretty great too.

Thanks

The suns could be of relatively equal size (as much as can be seen from the surface of the planet) and would eclipse each other on a regular basis-- this event could occur every few days, weeks or months or any other unit of time and herald great and cataclysmic occurance, like with every eclipse dark things awaken and begin to butcher the inhabitants of the planet.
I'm not sure about the other things though :/ but the best part of making your own fantasy setting is to claim it all happens in a different dimension, where the laws of physics are not like the ones we know (i.e. suns orbiting planets, magic is a scientific thing, etc.).
Hope this helps :)

Thanks. The idea that I need not have everything explained at the begining is a good one. I guess I can edit things as and when I find out more details:)
