'I just Can't Get you out of My Head

Lee-Sun’s first recollection on waking the morning after the gig was the beautiful, red-haired Fiona. Meeting her had made the aching head, the nausea and the fact that he was in no fit state to start his essay worth it. She had affected him in a way that he couldn’t explain or share with anyone, especially not his apish friend, Kai, who was currently lying in his own puke. Kai would never understand an interest in a woman that transcended her body, her willingness or her availability.

However, Kai had taught him some very valuable lessons; namely, how to deal with the morning after the night before. Hence, the bottle of irn-bru by the bed. By the time he had glugged the litre down, he was fairly confident that he could manage to get to the shower without leaving his own trail of vomit across the room.

The normal post- drunken-night-out rituals; the shower, forcing himself to eat, forcing Kai to clean his own sick, feeling guilty for not working on his essay; failed to completely expunge Fiona from his mind. Lee-Sun alternated between formulating excuses to see her again and berating himself for making so much of something that, to her, probably meant nothing. It would probably mean nothing to him, either, when he was sober and thinking clearly. He just didn’t know how to think clearly about her until he saw her again. That settled him! He was sure when he saw her again, he would realize that there was really nothing there and be able to move on. Therefore, he had to see her again to demonstrate that he didn’t have to see her again after that.

Lee-Sun squelched the part of himself that recognized his circuitous reasoning for what it was and focused on devising a way of bumping into Fiona that wouldn’t appear too contrived. While he wanted to figure out the effect she had on him, he was wary of appearing too eager when he was not entirely sure what he wanted from spending more time with her. He briefly considered asking Kai for help- given his past association with Shona- but dismissed that thought quickly. The last thing he needed was Kai getting the wrong idea about his interest in Fiona. Besides he wouldn’t put it past Kai to blab about his interest, which would recreate the scenario he had seen so often in the school playground where a girl would approach one of the boys and announce that her best friend fancied him. The memory of the tittering girls and the leering boys was enough for him to discount this idea immediately!

The problem of how to contrive another meeting with Fiona exercised his mind all that day and into the next. What could he do? He reviewed what he knew of her. He knew that she designed jewellery to sell on campus. Waiting until she was on campus again was probably the safest approach, although it would be difficult to make an excuse to speak to her. Maybe he could ask her to design a piece of jewellery for his...mum, cousin? How obvious does that look, he berated himself. It would be like carrying around a big neon sign that said that said, ‘I fancy you!’ Besides this approach meant that he had to wait for her to reappear on campus.  She was already intruding on his thoughts; distracting him when he should be focusing on his studies. The sooner he was able to see her again, the sooner he could blame his reaction on alcohol and then he would be able to put this bizarre obsession behind him.

No, waiting around for her to reappear on campus was not an option. What else did he know? He knew that as well as selling her jewellery on campus she also worked at a shop called Kehpri. He googled it. No help for him there. It was a small shop specializing in vintage clothing and jewellery; more specifically women’s vintage clothing and jewellery. If he approached her there she would think he was a- some sort of weird stalker; b- buying a gift for a special woman in his life or c- someone with a kink for women’s clothes and jewellery. He ignored the voice in his head that pointed out that the obsessive need he had to bump into her did verge on stalkerish behaviour and discounted the idea.

He could only think of one other option- the band, Sky 9. He knew that Shona was now having a ‘thing’ with the drummer so it made sense that she’d go and see him play and that she’d try and convince Fiona to go. He had already said that he had enjoyed the band so it wouldn’t seem strange that he would go and see them again. He only hoped that Shona’s ‘thing’ had not been a ‘one-night-only’, as she provided the only viable link to Fiona that didn’t make him look like a lovesick idiot or a wierd, crazed stalker. Don’t make problems where they don’t yet exist, he berated himself.

Having settled on this plan of action, he googled Sky 9 and discovered that they had a gig at The 13th Note on Thursday- only 4 days away. That gave him plenty of time to plan out his approach. Four days, he told himself. Then I can get rid of this thing I seem to have about this girl and get back to normal.
