Nightmare # 142

Sign says water. Sign says fish.
Sign says no imitating dreams of oxen.
And I don't know what that is.
Friends tell me, "It's us,

We're welcome if we're water
We're welcome if we are fish
But do not try exhibiting
Even one herd dream of an ox."

Good! 'Cause I don't

Care to know what that is.
Sounds romantic though.
So I took some time,
Took it to the coast.

Once there, I stole a boat
Like stealing someone's heart.
Horizon bound I headed out
Never to return 'till I was arrested
Just to spend some nights in jail.

Back on a street
Still wind in my face
Corner standing front
Of a small crowd caf,
I'm watching traffic pass.

And all around is that city
Push of people like gushes
Of steam from boilers.

In front of me stands
An old woman forcing
A dollar bill into my hand.
I tell her I'm not needy
But she won't hear of it.

I then turn around
And am shocked to see
Within the caf --there's an aquarium--
With water and with fish.

And I'm getting a sinking feeling
Like maybe I've been, among other things,
Imitating herd dreams of oxen.

And I don't even know what that is.
