Fantasy Books Forum Help with writing a sad scene ..

I'm currently trying to write a sad scene in my story but I just don't think it's hitting the mark.

Does anyone have any advice on how to make a sad scene believable and actually get the reader feeling a bit of empathy for the characters involved?
