Some interactive stories begin as any short story would - with some catching description or any standard hook.

Others are more specialized. I've seen "Let us begin." I've seen "An interactive story means ..." and I've seen "Would you like to be a ___ and decide between __ and ____. TITLE is an interactive story where ..."

Some start by asking the reader questions about the character. They ask for self description and values, and even what their childhood was like. This can establish "stats" in the more complex games.

Others start right in the action and use the readers choices to develop the character more organically.

Which way do you prefer? Do you try to keep the interactive story as "story like" as possible, or do you play up the format and layout character description choices for the reader?
