A limerick is a humorous poem consisting of five lines. The first, second, and fifth lines must have seven to ten syllables while rhyming and having the same verbal rhythm. The third and fourth lines only have to have five to seven syllables, and have to rhyme with each other and have the same rhythm.


A couple of examples:

A mouse in her room woke Miss Dowd
She was frightened--it must be allowed.
Soon a happy thought hit her --
To scare off the critter,
She sat up in bed and meowed.




A painter, who lived in Great Britain,
Interrupted two girls with their knittin'
He said, with a sigh,
"That park bench--well I
Just painted it, right where you're sittin.'"

A man with different name gear.
His hair sadly caused him fear.
In it lived ten cats.
Two elephants and three bats,
Hundreds of Giraffe and a deer.

There once was a man who had no hairHe feared from heat he could not bearwith the sun on his headHe can bake eggs and bread,Which he promised some day he would share.

When you first get the scent of a rose
And a tickling starts in your nose,
Followed by wheezing,
Eyes watering and sneezing
Then you’re allergic to them, I suppose.

Said Shakespeare , I may be perverse
But, for writing plays I’m now averse
So I’ve invented the Sonnet
And with my own style on it
Gone progressively from Bard to Verse.
