Writer's Questions Forum Question about monetary system..

I'm writing a post apocalyptic novel and am trying to think of the best way a civilization of the future, one based on equality and peace, would develop a monetary or non-monetary system.  For instance, say I am a carpenter who makes furniture and you are a farmer who grows fruits and vegetables how would we trade?  Would the barter system work? I don't want to base this on socialism, communism or capitalism as these don't work in my humble opinion.  All ideas and help welcome.  Thank you!
