Oh, Child

Oh, Child

A Poem by Bella Kelly
"

This was a free write for a class. We had to write a poem based off of our favourite line from the book 'Their Eyes Were Watching God'. I chose, "Janie's first dream was dead, so she became a woman."

"

Oh, Child, you had so many hopes and dreams

For this world so full to the brim with bleak

Oh, Child, your cerulean eyes with innocence gleamed

Seeing only the green of the grass, the silver cloud streak

Oh, Child, could I but have protected you just one day longer

Let your pure golden heart continue to flutter

Oh, child, would that your heart had been stronger

Maybe now my words I wouldn’t stutter

Oh, Child, I killed you in the name of all that is proper

And my blue eyes turned grey like rest of the world

Oh, Child, sweet Child, I stand stained of rusted copper

A cold, belittled monument to the dreams that in my heart once swirled

Oh, Child, Sweet, Innocent, forgotten Child

I need you now, more than ever…
