A Poem by Firestone Feinberg

Depressing that poetry rarely appears
On pages that promise implicitly so --
The words and the phrases are certainly there --
But nothing like beauty is likely to show --

And knowing it -- readers -- scatter -- fast --
Then elsewhere go in hope to find
A single pleasure for the mind
A thing of wonder made to last...

They go to museums and galleries fair
They go to the circus -- a concert -- a play --
To spectacle see -- or symphony hear --
Alas! for poor poets have nothing to say.

A thing of wonder made to last - a good definition of poetry and true of this poem.

Poets do seem to be at the bottom of the rung which is a shame. There does seem to be an interest in the younger poets at poetry readings though. I saw a poet the other day named Maxine Kumin that was in her seventies when she gave a reading and died shortly after. She was amazing. Great poem David.

It's impossible for a serious poet to make a living nowadays.

i wish poets didn't get most of their all of their recognition after death...

be nice to hear some applause while still around to savor it...

at least to know that we are read and somewhat appreciated...

we act out our lives with the words we write, but find the audience has turned in their tickets to go to a different play.

There are some poets -- a few; our job is to find them and their job is to let us know they're here!

Then revive it! You are young! Now is the time!
but when they leave the play of life
words will filter and guide their sight
for poetry is all around
in it is hope to be found
words are beautiful when set free
feel them , love them , POETRY *)*)*)
