My Aunt develops a taste for carrots (2)

My Aunt develops a taste for carrots (2)

A Chapter by AloysiaVerben
"

Simon turns his Aunt into a rabbit.

"

'Simon!' My Aunt enveloped me in an enormous hug, lifting me about two feet off the ground and successfully squeezing the air out of my lungs. 'Aunt Sidney' I wheezed and tried not to suffocate until she let me go. 'You've grown so much!, I remember when you were a just a little baby!' I clenched my teeth and smiled at the tall, round woman in front of me. Aunt Sidney was a large woman, who always managed to look the same in a baggy, unflattering dress and short brown hair. She visited every year to see me, bringing strange gifts, once she brought me a pen that looked like she had stolen it from a bank. It was one of those pens they chain to the desks where you sign checks, complete with chain, and teeth marks.

I smiled and my Aunt opened her handbag, bringing out some indescribable thing wrapped in what looked like a mixture of newspaper, christmas paper, and magazine pages. I cautiously opened the package at one end and tipped the contents into my hand, feeling something woolen fall into my hands. I looked at the jumper (and I use that word loosely) in my hands, it was a horrible shade of yellow and seemed to have frayed red ribbon attached to it in various places along with several blue buttons. I managed to smile in a way that I hope said 'It's the thought that counts' not 'I wish we had a fireplace'. Aunt Sidney seemed to believe I liked it and went to help my mum make dinner while I fell onto the couch and flipped dug the small notebook out of my pocket. It was bound in brown leather and the title was written in about fifty different languages across the front. I scanned the characters looking for something familiar, running my finger down the leather. I didn't need to look because as soon as my skin touched the leather the titles flickered and disappeared, leaving only english. The title read: A personal notebook of Greg- Professor of the Gift

I flipped open the book to the middle and read what was written in flowing cursive that seemed to move and change shape as I read it. As I turned the pages I saw that they were all incantations, recipes or notes of some kind. I read pages entitled: Move, Circle of safety and a recipe for fruit mince pie. I turned to a page that at first looked empty, but when I looked again I saw there were a few words written in the corner of the page. 'Despised, downsize' I muttered softly. I heard a crash and scream from the next room and rushed in to see my Mum gathering up a brown rabbit that was nibbling at the salad Mum was using to make hamburgers. 'What happened?' I asked quickly, My Mum put the rabbit onto the table and glared at me. 'Your Aunt turned into a rabbit! A RABBIT! What did you do Simon?' I held the leather book up guiltily and she pursed her lips. 'Greg came and saw you.' Not a question, a statement. 'Yes' I nodded and her shoulders slumped. 'I knew this was coming, I just hoped it wouldn't for a while. GREG!' She yelled into the air and Greg appeared by my side with an innocent expression. He must have been watching the entire time. 'Angela, So nice to see you again, I- uh- I...' My Mum glared at him angrily. 'You told Simon about the Gift! Without my permission! THIS' She picked up the my Aunt-Rabbit and showed Greg 'is what I was worried about! Turn her back. Now.'

Greg shuffled nervously and looked at the floor like a child being scolded. 'I wanted to see how powerful he was, very apparently' he mumbled and then looked up and grinned 'The notebook recognised him! It opened for him and he could read it! He's power, very powerful. It was easy for him to turn Sidney into a rabbit. He'll be able to do really big stuff in no time!' Greg was practically bouncing up and down by now, which just made my mother glare more. 'Okay, okay. I'll get him to change her back. Simon.' he turned to me, excited. 'You just have to think, a lot of our 'magic' is done by thought, some is done my word, but most is done by thought. Thoughts have power. Just imagine your Aunt Sidney as she used to be, although I really do prefer her as a rabbit. Just think, want her to turn back and she will'. Greg smiled expectatly and my mother glared at him before saying 'it's okay, do what he says'

I closed my eyes and imagined my Aunt how she usually looked with her frumpy dress and brown hair. I wish she would change back. I thought. When I opened them again my Aunt was beign conselled by my mum and Greg was grinning bigger than I thought was possible. 'Great!' he practically shouted. 'She doesn't even have the teeth anymore, sometimes that happens. There might be a change or two in her favoured diet but I think that's for the better.' Greg grinned, my mother glared, my Aunt cried and I just stood there feeling dizzy. It was going to be a long night.
