A Night at the Theatre

A Night at the Theatre

A Poem by The New Bard
"

This one is less depressing. Basically, this details what I commonly feel and see while seconds before performance on opening night. Those moments are some of the most magical of my life. <3

"

People of all shape and form

Are seen rushing all around.

They check the lights; they check the sound,

And like honey bees, they swarm.

Leads put on their make-up,

While they check their voice,

Wondering if it is their method of choice.

Then the audience speaks, and the actors wake up.

For the thousandth time,

They sing the hardest lyric of all

Or repeat the dance that makes them fall.

Before the night ends, they must be prime.

From every corner you see,

People who don themselves

Like chameleons, who camouflage themselves

Into whatever they are destined to be.

Sweat pours down their faces;

It isn’t only the heat that’s getting to them.

Thoughts of disappointment make them feel condemned.

What if they fail and are disgraces?

But they realize they aren’t who they are;

They are those that they pretend to be,

And all that knows this story can agree,

That they aren’t close to them, by far.

If they make fault, they know they must segue.

They line up, ready for the opening show,

Aware and unaware of what will undergo.

In the distance, they hear, “Break a leg!”

Now they are ready for what spectators came to see;

Everyone knows to go out with a bang.

They take a breath and whisper what Stromboli once sang,

“Hi-diddle-dee-dee, an actor’s life for me.”

I finally made it through the length of A poem. I mean this in a good way. Job well done. Typically poetry loses me.
