Essay - On Being Imaginative

Essay - On Being Imaginative

A Poem by The New Bard
"

I wrote this as an assignment in Creative Writing class; it basically details my very philosophy on life.

"

Dost anyone remember the word “imagine?”

Everyone today wishes to be dull and real.

Dost thou remember thy Wonderland?

(Or, as it’s oft called, the Neverland?)

Both these mixed build all that makes us a child,

And we should keep it together with a dream.

That is a word we oft forget: dream -

It is only a word a child could imagine,

But perhaps we should give blessing to this child,

For, without him, we shalt lose what is real;

After all, what holds more logic than thy Neverland,

Or especially thy mad Wonderland?

Why would thou wish to depart from Wonderland?

Without it, thou wouldn’t have reached thy dream.

Dost thou remember the Lost Boys from Neverland?

Even while they sup, they’ve shown how they could imagine.

When young, ne’er are thou concerned with what is real,

But why leave this optimism to just a child?

Ne’er forget: see the world through the eyes of a child.

Be merry! Be mad, like thy friends in Wonderland!

Who cares if Miss Liddell woke to find it a dream?

In thy mind, the paramount is how thou shalt imagine

And how thou can use thy power to fly through Neverland.

They will try to make thee a pirate, exiled from Neverland

For parents don’t seem to show any respect for a child;

They do not wish for us to imagine.

Some of them, to me, are as mad as the Queen of Wonderland,

But they are hopeless; ne’er again shalt they dream;

Like Gradgrind, all they know is facts and the real.

Remember the phantasy that makes the universe real,

The pixie dust that helps us fly to Neverland;

Remember all that in the end creates the dream,

The nature that, after forty years, internally still makes the a child;

Remember the Caterpillar’s advice from your daily trip to Wonderland;

Remember what helps us ne’er to demolish what we imagine.

It is the time for a world that thou can imagine;

It shalt be as whimsical as thy Wonderland or Neverland.

All thou has to do is dream.

The New Bard
This is a sestina: the Hell of all things poetic. Before you criticize, I want you to try and write a better one!

No criticism here. After reading this I attempted to rewrote one of my pieces as a sestina and it is a toughy. I have this odd quirk about not repeating words. So I wanted to try writing something that implored just such a technique. Well done if you ask me.
