Teachings of a Soldier

Teachings of a Soldier

A Poem by Reuben Porter
"

A poem about the lessons given to use by past soldiers that we have yet to learn from.

"

The guns boom and crackle above,

the shouts and screams of my fellow men

echo in my head,

but why can I hear these haunting calls

that plagued me so long ago,

for I am already gone

laid to rest for years on end,

just a memory of a time worse off

a lesson not yet learned,

did our lost lives not teach?

They couldn't have,

for the guns still boom and crackle above

and the shouts and screams still echo

while soldiers like I was once,

still fall on blood stained ground.

Simply stunning. You have written this so well, and instead of writing heaps and cluttering it with intense graphic imagery you've kept it nice and simple and yet it still retains poignancy and power. I loved the flow of it, too, very solid but very prominent. Thank you so much for sharing

I liked it. The flow was held back by all the commas/periods - I think it would flow more naturally if you didn't end every line like that - maybe if your carried a phrase over into another line...

still, a great write - thnaks for sharing

Wow, very deep. I like the progression, it seems to me that the speaker is alive at the beginning and hearing those past voices, then by the end he is one of those voices, possibly dead. I like it a lot!

Beautiful write, thought provoking point

"Did our lost lives not teach?

They couldn't have,

For the guns still boom and crackle above"

I like how you use the phrase "our lost lives". It gives a real impact to the poem about why you feel so strongly. It was your men, your life, and that makes the poem so much more powerful. I feel that line is one that will stick with me for a long time.

Just a memory of a time worse off,
A lesson not yet learned,
Did our lost lives not teach?

beautiful, strong lines these are....
They're filled with much thought.
