Toll

Toll

A Poem by Lavi
"

To pay the toll of existence.

"
There's a sorrow deep in my soul
Whispering to me the price of my toll
Like a cigarette on a rainy night
It's corroding smoke the only thing keeping me upright

I don't know why I'm always longing
Why I'm always after a sense of belonging
Perhaps it's the anger that lurks in the shadows
That wants nothing more than to knock over my barriers like dominoes

At the same time, I no longer feel trapped
Kind of like a bird who no longer has its wings snapped
Whose freedom had been gone so long
That it no longer knew how to fly and belong

There's a sorrow deep in my soul
Whispering to me the price of my toll
Like a girl who wanted to survive
But didn't know how to feel alive

Nothing is ever entirely free, there will always be a price to pay and anyone that suggests otherwise is either deluded or from a different planet altogether... think about it.... nice little philosophical write and consequently enjoyed..... Neville

My pleasure entirely... Neville
This is so beautifully melancholic- I love the emotion you express and the almost lyrical rhythm of this piece. My favorite lines have to be these- “

I don't know why I'm always longing
Why I'm always after a sense of belonging

I think deep down we are all searching for that sense of belonging. Like a constant, aching yearning. Perhaps that is what we are after when we search and wander. So very beautifully and poignantly expressed!

Whispering to me the price of my toll. It's funny how the simple things still cost even the wages of pain.

Haha, thank you so much :) First stanza set up the flow nicely I think. I appreciate your thoughts.
I think this poem is genius, Lavi. My interpretation is you had to pay the tolls through a life's journey. Some expensive and other mundane and small. you made it, but you are confused as which way to continue. I hope I'm not to far off. Well done! Best wishes!
