Atonement

Atonement

A Poem by Star Cross
"

...

"

There is no such thing as one world.
Is it an illusion,
Or can I go beyond that belief?

I know that there are seven others before and after us,
Yet why do we not choose to destroy them?
We choose to destroy the one that we must cherish the most.
Do we not see the irony?
What a self-given answer.

I choose to believe in mankind
But mankind has chosen to not believe in itself.
As this world dissipates,
We cherish the other seven that will not rescue us.
Gluttony, lust, sloth, wrath, envy, vanity and above all greed
Has not destroyed the one virtue that we should cherish the most,
But rather,
Our own hands did.

Love.

I've been reading this off and on all day. When I got to "there are seven others before and after us" the Seven Deadly Sins popped into my mind and you seem to confirm that in the later listing of "gluttony..." etc.
This poem really appeals to me; of course, symbolism is always interesting and you seem, in many of your poems, to call on religious symbols to track your emotions.
