Not Far Away

Not Far Away

A Poem by Allen Smuckler

I looked deep within my sister’s eyes today

and reached inside her soul...

I pulled and tugged at nature’s way

and said, not far away...

I know within my being,

my sister’s eyes though glazed...

can sense the world around her

she’s not that far away...

She’s standing at the entrance

the precipice, the door...

she’s searching for the key of life

to step outside once more...

It shows upon her face today

she’s aching to be free

It’s time my sister, you can see

you’re not that far away...

And now to speak the words we need

to say you’re back again...

relate the journey you’ve been on

with purpose and belief...

you’re not away,

 but here to stay

as we rejoice the day...

My sister passed away a few weeks later.
It would mean a lot to me if you would also read "Does She Hear" and "I Wept Today"
Thanks, Allen

Such an emotional, heartbreaking write...

She’s standing at the entrance
the precipice, the door...
she’s searching for the key of life
to step outside once more...

captures so much emotion of one's thinking so deeply there...amazing writing!!

I believe this life is a "vacation" where we are here but a short time. Then there comes a time when we are called "home" This is a beautiful poem expressing those moments that hurt and yet this is so tender and not sad but loving. We get a moment sometimes to have that last chance to connect with someone before they are called home and this is what this poem reminds me of.

This is so so touching. Tuggs at ones heart.
Now I sit here with tears in my eyes. This reminds me of my grand-father before he passed away. And just recently my father n law. They seemed to be there, right behind their eyes, searching to find that key of life they had lost along the way.
This is so touching, heartfelt Allen
Just beautifully written from your heart.

This is very touching, and I know you poured your heart and soul into it. Sitting at that bedside and waiting, we feel so helpless.
