The Art of Making Tea

A Poem by April Child

Warm the pot and cup

with hot water.

Place tea into

the pot, add freshly

boiled water

allow to draw.

Stare wistfully out

the kitchen window

recalling how

it was the other day

as you showed me

the precision of

your tea making ritual,

not long after we

shared another more

primal sort of ritual.

Pour the brew,

splash with full fat

whole milk, watch

it take colour as

I stir and agitate

the tea and milk

together to form

a perfect blend.

But you’re not here

and it’s just tea.

i love everything about this piece. the subtlety, the underlying yearnings, the word choice -everything.

it's simply astounding how our routines bring back memories of the beloved people in our lives and this poem just perfectly captures that mystical feeling of recollection.

the words hold the attention of the reader so firmly that it warps them into your own universe.

i loved how you give a progression of emotions by presenting a step-by-step procedure of making tea. very novel indeed.

simple as it is marvelous! great job!
