’Looking at the Moon’

My heart has died with this Land.

I am old and tired, tired to run.

White man came and tore the trees out,

they tore my people away from their roots.

White man came and smothered rivers, they stopped

the free-flowing water, they closed us in corrals.

White man came and turned Land upside down

only because of that yellow metal which hardened

their hearts as hard as gold itself.

White man came and burned plains, prairies and valleys,

we looked how our homes burned to ashes, as we

did burn to ashes and disappeared with the wind.

My heart has died with this Land.

I am old and tired, tired to run.

I only wanted to live in peace,

wander wherever I wanted

and watch the moon.

Words with no meaning, broken promises,

none was so important to them than

to deprive our Land,  kill our game

and take our freedom.

White man came and burned plains, prairies and valleys,

we looked how our homes burned to ashes, as we

did burn to ashes and disappeared with the wind.

My heart has died with this Land.

‘Looking at the Moon’-character is totally invented (by me) but the idea for this story was born after reading Dee Brown’s book ‘Bury my heart at the Wounded Knee’.

A very sad poem. Many Native American poem had the same feel. The Native Americans did not understand why the white people wanted to destroy and damage the land.

My heart has died with this Land."
Many tribes pray for wisdom and common sense. I don't see the white man greed changing. Thank you for sharing the outstanding poetry dear friend.
