In the Eye of the Beholder

In the Eye of the Beholder

A Poem by Astra

In the eye of the beholder,
I am worth every penny
Or not worth a dime.
I am the worst of enemies
Or the best of friends.
I am a shoulder to cry on
Or a mat to walk upon.

In the eye of the beholder,
I am a unique creation
Or I am Medusa incarnate
The world revolves around me
Or I travel alone
I am everything to be wished for
Or I am a smidgen of dust.

In the eye of the beholder,
I am anything a person might see,
But what if the beholder
Happens to be me?
What am I supposed to see?
How should I define me?

I like this poem for its meaning. I think you touch on something that everyone can relate to, for we can all see ourselves in both a good light, or a bad, and sometimes it's hard to tell which one is appropriate. And it is hard to tell sometimes how we define ourselves. Sometimes it seems easier to define ourselves on what others see rather than ourselves. I think that is the gem behind this poem, and your language is fantastic to boot. You are an amazing poet, Astra!
