Reflection is me

Reflection is me

As I stand before this wizard of time,

watch the light swirl around in my mind

I can’t help but wonder how

I lost my life in an instance .

In the past, the image returned

was that of a boy,  5/8’s of a man,

nicknamed a boy, *igger, retarded,

even the teachers made fun of me

look at that fool,

sitting in the desk drawer

today he sits in a garbage pail,

surely  this two-tone boy will fail.

I fought the image

as it jumped out at me,

just wanted to forget all the image I see.

My mom freaked

when she gave birth to me,

told the doctors this boy can’t be,

I could not this child,

who looks like that,

for religious purposes

and because he’s black.

The train of light

reflecting back

brought tears to my eyes

and my thoughts…

“how time does fly”.

My traumatic beginning

opened a brand new world,

I could see into the future

and watch it unfurl.

I no longer saw

the color associated with skin,

I knew for sure,

something was about to begin.

I read people through their eyes,

a wasted look,

the pain obscured

by happiness, easily mistook.

They said one thing

but I saw something else,

confidence lacking  in one self.

The years brings pain

that washes out with time,

a disease has now, overtaken my mind.

It’s incurable nature and that such a pity,

it happen long ago in a different city.

The breath of life

is being stolen from me,

like a thief in the night,

please give it back to me

The clock is ticking

with what we might fear,

I can’t waste my time

shedding anymore tears.

It’s now the present

and the light reaches my eyes,

I’m that same man, little older

A little wise.

Faced all my demons

in tormenting glass,

while life passes by, oh so fast.

In the well of the souls

I found only one,

a weathered man

who could not be undone.

This man in the mirror

whose reflection is me,

has been there fighting every step

to set me free.

So when I look in the mirror

the mirror reflects back,

the thought that comes to mind,

I have become my best, a whole, in tack…

This is an incredible write, Ralphy, where you allow yourself to be vulnerable and tell your story. Thank you for the trust you place in us and may none of us fail in that trust. You make my heart break, but at the same time you make me happy that I know you. You are an incredibly strong man.

A very well-penned piece, too.

You sir, are so so much more than was first seen. I have to say that my eyes got a little misty. I have never understood why others would want to hurt someone in this manner. I am very thankful that you can see who you truly are. I could easily say so much more but will leave it at this. I am blessed to have the chance to know you. I am very thankful for you...Hugs!

Holding on to yourself, and facing yourself is the essence of what holding on is all about. Very nice poem and interestingly done!

I love how open and honest this is. And how you really let people "see" you.
Good Job :)

This is so deep and beautiful I really love it. I think my favorite part was "I read people through their eyes, a wasted look, the pain obscured by happiness, easily mistook." I think I liked this part the best because it is true that people's eyes can't lie. This is a great write I absolutely love it... :)

Wow, impressive. I love how you gained confidence, despite your past. It must have been horrible for you. I wouldn't know, though, being of the Caucasian Persuasion, but I understand where you're coming from. It's hard being ostracized for something you have no control over. I love the metaphors you used; it paints an intricate picture.
