At the Bottom of the Liquor Bottle

At the Bottom of the Liquor Bottle

A Poem by Dalton Wagoner

At the bottom of the Liquor Bottle
I saw I was out again
I am on my third bottle
And not a penny to my name
I was trying to get drunk enough
To alleviate my shame

At the bottom of the Liquor Bottle
I saw us
We walked hand-in-hand
We went in for the kiss
We frolicked and played
We were full of bliss

At the bottom of the Liquor Bottle
I saw us again
We were fighting and screaming
I made you cry
You threatened to leave me
I knew you wouldn't say goodbye

At the bottom of the Liquor Bottle
I saw myself
Damp like my face from the tears
And smelling of alcohol pure
It was dark like life without you
But I guess that's something I must inure

Very straightforward message, told with poignant honesty. There's much power in your words, from what I have seen (altho not a drinker) any addiction could be told this way & it's a very sad story. It's a good foreshadow & symbolism to have the bottle being empty, as it represents his life and everything he loves falling away becuz of the addiction. Whenever in a relationship with an alcoholic, it's a 3-way situation & the bottle always gets the best of a person. I feel all that heavy hopelessness in your truthful words.

Thank you, I appreciate your feedback! And you did a great job of reviewing :-)
I've been dealing with my dad having problems with alcoholism my entire life, so it was interesting to hear it through the alcoholic's point of view. It was interesting to read a poem like this! What song is it based off?

This poem was based off of the song "Drink You Away" by Justin Timberlake.
i liked it, it wasn't to drawn out but it didn't just skip strait to the point most people i see writing like this get it wrong but it seems you didn't i would like to know the name of the song you were inspired by.

Lol thanks
A story about a man who has accepted his fate, for he did write it by himself.
A story about a man trying to forget his pain by geting druk for he blame himself. But alchohol couldn't help, for the past events of his life started replaying "At the bottom of the liquour bottle"
This is a beautiful, the reader can easily picture the events happening. You've done a good job with the imagery. And the rhyme is great. Thumbs up.
