Rocket-Man and Boy Chestnut GO! Chapter 1-3
Tagline: Out of the strange blue mist come forth the supermen of tomorrow!
Plot:
Radio (and soon to be serial matinée) stars Virgil Townsend and Freddy Weller AKA Mr. Bolt and sidekick Lightning Lad have a job to do! Lead the 1947 Macy's Thanksgiving day parade. Oh but to be heroes in the cold shadows of real ones for the honest to goodness stars of the parade are Captain Smithee and his Space Scarecrows who have just returned from the first manned space flight in their intrepid rocket.
The narcissistic actors go along with it and put on the fake grin and wave. Now ho, what's this? The impending sound of doom and gloom? Disaster strikes when the giant Gobbler balloon deflates and some of the helium causes an explosion when it lands on the rocket. BOOOOM! Hundreds in the crowd perish in an instant. The City is in panic for a strange blue mist has covered the disaster zone making it near impossible for rescue workers to enter. Commies! it must be the Commies!
But out of that strange blue mist come our intrepid survivors Mr. Bolt and Lightning Lad! Apparently unscathed, though at the epicenter of the explosion, they help the survivors of the crowd to their feet, including their serials' costume girl, Franny who was in the crowd with their producers (now dead) and for whom Virgil has a thing for. And now, at last, touted as the heroes of the day! The Week! The Month! The Year!
But where is Captain Smithee and his rocket? When the blue mist finally does clear , any trace of them is gone, leaving many a scientist scratching their noggins. And one in particular, a Doctor Warren T. Howard.
Doc Howard visits Virgil and Freddy in the secret underground lab where they have been kept for a series of rigorous tests, including the taking of blood and tissue samples. It seems as if their skeletal structure is now thrice as durable and... ponder this... other powers are taking shape.
Virgil discovers that he is essentially a human jet pack, shooting thrusts of jet propulsion out of the soles of his feet and palms of his hands.
Virgil is ecstatic and declares himself the Rocket-Man! Vowing that he will only use his powers in the name of Democracy!
A distraught seemingly powerless Freddy escapes and runs home to spend Christmas with his family.
Sitting with his fam, roasting chestnuts on the open fire, the lad discovers he can manipulate the heat of the chestnuts and hurl them into the air causing small but violent explosions! His father, who is hit by a chestnut shell is not all too happy about this.
Meanwhile Rocket-Man and Doc Howard survey the disaster site with a giger meter only to discover trace amounts of an odd radiation, which must have been the blue mist and thus given our man his powers! But that could mean... and yes! it is here that they are attacked by a cackle of flying men, Captain Smithee's Space Scarecrows!
A tumbling flight and fight across the skyline of Manhattan dazzles the eyes and ears, as Doc Howard is confronted by the once thought dead Captain Smithee , the once genius has now seemingly gone mad as he declares himself born again of the stuff of the stars. And now he sees the light and he will stop at nothing to rid the world of humans.
With a cackle he calls his Scarecrows back to him and is off, with a click of his fingers they teleport to the unknown.
Now back in street garb, Virgil visits Franny, whom he certainly has a thing for, and asks if she could make him a new suit, "Something that really says WOW!" Then proceeds to take her out to dinner. This proves more difficult for her at least, as Virgil is getting recognized by everyone on the street and is more than happy to wade in his fresh found stardom.
Meanwhile Captain Smithee visits a distraught Freddy, who has been holed up in his bedroom for days. Smithee promises Freddy unlimited power if he joins him, sees that the lad has a gift, that he is unique and thus special and thus better than anyone, even Virgil who had abandoned him so quickly.
The boy collects hundreds of chestnuts from his grandfather's farm, filling two whole satchels. More than enough to wreak havoc on the lowly people of the city.
Virgil and Franny have finally been able to settle down - or rather Virgil has finally been able to settle down as he was as eager as a beaver with his adoring fans- and enjoy a nice quiet dinner or so they think!
Freddy, announcing himself as The Nutter, shows up and proceeds to destroy the restaurant and everyone in it!
Meanwhile, Doc Howard starts to put the pieces together and figures that all the survivors of the explosion must be accounted for as they all could be developing super powers.
Virgil and Freddy fight and what a show it is! Then real trouble shows up as Smithee and his Space Scarecrows begin to terrorize the city with their once rocket now turned super laser!
And amidst the chaos Franny begins to discover stranger powers of her own...
