If This Is Not Art then What Is ?

If This Is Not Art then What Is ?

A Poem by Tania

I am falling out of my thoughts
and I feel as if every step I take is leading to an empty room .

This is my art.
This is the way I painted my soul.
When you visit my gallery ,
you will perceive spaces with no image.
Spaces that remain untouched .
Spaces that remain a mystery.

My idiosyncrasies are splashed
and you will end up lost in colors.
You will think to yourself
if this is not art then what is ?

It is  an adventure.
It is  galvanizing.
Your inspiration arrives from my  melancholic touch.
Your inspiration arrives from my unending thoughts.
Your inspiration  is a piece of art ,
that lies between putrid walls
and yet
you say
if this is not art then what is?

but if this is not art then what is ?

It is  beautiful
and it is  empty
you see no words
you feel no emotion
you sense no ending
and it's confusing
for you don't know when to stop.

You don't know when to stop.
You don't know when to stop ..
Breathing .
you solely don't when it will stop.

and there you stand
thinking if this is not art then what is ?

if only
you could see the way I paint
the way I feel words and thoughts
becoming an image.
If only
questions were answered
and feelings understood .
But then again ,
that destroys the mystery .
and if that is not art then what is?

wow! thank you for such an optimistic and truly kind outlook towards my work.
Tania, I think this is a very nice poem and I enjoyed it very much. You highlight and bring to life the "mystery" behind your art in every creative line and word and contradiction you chose here. The contradictions are necessary here and they really drive home the meaning of your piece, that your art is a mystery. Your descriptions invite me to want to see more of your world and what your art is. Great job, my friend!

Thank you ! Glad you enjoyed it :)
Art is something different to all people - while some may agree on aspects they all get a unique insight and feel from pieces - be it writing, painting, photography, music even or whatever. I think you hit the nail on the head - mystery - beautiful mystery.

Very true. Thank you for pending ..:)
A lovely write that entertains, sure it has faults as does mine however JayG lays out valuable advice even though it knocks you on the chin. If jayg visited my works it would be a TKO every time. Keep writing!

i find this write, very creative, original and {personally for me}, allowed my mind/imagination to wander its own halls of what i find inspiring for me.

i adore the abstract
in all art forms, especially in writing. brilliant dictation, use of language...the opening lines, grabbed me right away.

your pen painted the topic at hand, amazingly well — thank you for sharing — x — barrie

you’re welcome, Tania...i look forward to visiting more of your writings:)

You open with a statement that the protagonist is heading for a perceived empty room.

You know why that happens, and what that means (or at least what you want to to mean). But the reader doesn't, and rather than giving context to make the stanza meaningful to a reader, you change the subject, leaving the reader saying, "But wait, didn't you just say..."

Context is the thing that's missing—though not for you. You say, "This is my art." It is? What is? You know, but the reader, the one you wrote this for doesn't.

You say you "painted" your soul. I'm sure you know what you mean by that, but the reader doesn't. If one paints one's soul, I would assume it would be in a range of colors, not an image. Yet you take pains to tell the reader that there are no images, and that there are spaces untouched and spaces that are a mystery. So in the same stanza you talk about painting a soul and you say it's unpainted. And only you know what the term "mystery" means in terms of this piece.

In short, you forget that the reader has no access to your intent for the meaning of a given line, and you provide no context for it.So what does the reader have? Only what the words suggest to them, based on THEIR background, not yours.

Never forget that the reader cannot hear the emotion in your voice as they read, or know what's in your mind. And given that the reader has a different background, education, age group, area and cultural differences, and even gender expectations, the image that comes to your mind as you read may not be what the words inspire in the reader. So you need to take that into account as you write, and provide a self-guided trail that will provide it's own context.

Instead of talking to the reader, and telling them about your world, you need to invite them to live it. That reader comes to you for an emotional experience. They seek entertainment, not data.

I'm sorry my news isn't better, I know you worked hard on this.

Hang in there, and keep on writing
