A Broken Heart

A man loses what's most precious to him.

Emptiness consumed my very soul

Watching her lithe form depart.

I knew it wasn't her fault,

Yet I felt a desire to scream at her.

But my heart had been permanently shattered

And I could never pick up the pieces.

I wept at the thought of our last conversation.

We had been so very cruel to one another.

Emotions collided within me in waves,

Awaiting their freedom to be heard.

I had to refuse their requests,

Too much pain and sorrow...

A tragedy had destroyed us and our love,

And seeing me was too much for her.

Still I loved her always.

We still love our son,

Wherever he may be.

But I do not believe in Heaven nor Hell,

I knew the horrible truth.

The immutable fact that we would never,

ever see his beautiful smile again...

I can think of no remedy or balm

That could bring us back together,

As a family.

Only the hope she finds happiness someday and somewhere.

There is naught to do,

But simply grieve alone.

I will always love you, my Claire,

No matter what has befallen us.

Just let me know what you think. It's the first Poem I've written concerning the concept of Love, so be somewhat gentle.

I just want to say, I'm not actually very good at reviewing. But I'm going to give it a go.

I like it. It's sad but I like it that way. My favourite part is this:

Don't ask me why that is my favourite because I don't know. It just stood out to me. I love the way it's written. You can actually feel the emotions he going through. Good Job!!!

Thanks. At the time that I wrote this poem I had never truly experienced that kind of loss, the loss of a friend or family member or loved one.

What can be more tragic for a man than to loose his woman and his child? That you jave accepted this cruelest blow of fate and still wished her happiness speaks of a greater spiritual love. The poem is very profound and conveys your loss and love in totality.

Hmmmm, I once felt this way about a butterfly, mind I was younger then. To stop it flying away I pulled its wings off. Strange this, but after that it no longer held any sway over my thoughts. I later that day used it as bait to catch my dinner....

Aww that was a sentimental poem...I am mostly fascinated by rhyming poetry but this had my eyes glued until the very last word, despite being an exception. I'm sure this would have left many people dewy-eyed. I loved it!

Thank you. I'm rather averse to rhyming as I believe it can often get in the way of relaying certain concepts and emotions. I'm also not very good with rhyming poetry so I steer clear of that which I cannot do very well, lol.

You're right. That's what happened with my first poem actually. You remember reviewing my poem? The one which had some syntax and grammar issues...I guess those happened because I wanted to make the lines rhyme. But now, hopefully, I shouldn't have much problem with the rhymes in my next...I've now got a rough idea at least. Well then...keep up your good work!
