Sleepless For The Thousanth Time

Sleepless For The Thousanth Time

A Poem by Jordan Avechuco

Lonely nights,

Forever wasted in this room.

My mind is so clogged that sleep is a mere fantasy.

Can't drive,

Don't drink,

Though sometimes I wonder why I don't.

Sure would help my nerves.

So much I want to say,

Yet so little is ever said.

You have no idea how much this hurts,

To see you flirt with others,

Chasing them instead of me.

But alas that is simply how it goes,

Not a damn thing I can do to change it.

So much to say,

Too little to try.

I bite my tongue to keep our world at ease,

My little words could crumple it all.

But you already knew that didn't you?

You already knew that your smile could bring the dead back to life.

You already knew that my heart begs for you embrace.

But it is not what is known that you need worry,

It is what remains hidden that could shake you,

Shake you and show you just how empty my soul is without you.

Never doubt what emptiness can make a man do,

Never doubt how much power you really have,

And never forget what it feels like to be alone with just your fears to keep you company.

It's never fun to be alone with your thoughts at night, especially when they hold fear right in front of you. I know this feeling too well...watching the one you want go after others, yet you feel in your heart that you would be just the right one for them, then nothing would be wrong and seeing how happy they would be. I fell in love with my best friend a few years back, but he never liked me the same way, yet somehow I still reminded him of my feelings for him as he would have new girlfriends, get hurt and begin all over again. He only seemed most normal and calm around me, happy. He knew that I understood him much better than any other person...but he never felt the same. He and I are still close, but I feel that me telling him my feelings brought us closer together, made our friendship stronger.

Spectacular writing, full of quotable gold. I love how you are able to turn impossible love into an expression of so much more depth and power. Turning unrequited love into a motif towards the soul as well as the consequences of unspoken truth is a common yet agonizing struggle faced in youth, and yet with the youth of the themes you address, your words are timeless and full of experience, metaphor, and wisdom that is ancient. Enjoy reading your work and definitely am glad that I found your work. As always keep up the good work!
