Expectations of Love

Expectations of Love

A Poem by Alyssa
"

What love should be and what it is.

"

Her friends told her

To look for someone tall

And popular

Who could lift heavy weights

And had experience

With this kind of thing

Her mother told her

To look for someone

Rich and wealthy

Who would care for her

Who could make her a bride

And be a good father

Her mind told her

To look for someone

Who would let her travel

And had an accent

And would show her

a new view of life

an unseen world

And one day

she found a boy

Who wasn’t very tall

Or very in shape

He only had a few friends

But he was really good at video games

And played a guitar

Though not very well

He worked at a Dairy Queen

And paid for his own clothes

And sometimes

Bought a Barbie

For his 8-year-old sister

He had never left the state

And he had an accent that matched hers

But they laughed together

And he told her stories

And took her around the city

To find adventure

And he told her he loved her

On top of the highest building in town

And despite her preparation

She loved him too
