Fall Is In The Air

Fall Is In The Air

A Poem by Don Shaw
"

I love the Fall

"
        Fall Is In The Air

                    Fall is in the air.
Not only is this temperature cooling off,
but was evident in the amount of voices one hears outside.
Voices that were once quieted by the hot Texas sun.
From my back yard i can hear kids at play.
Sounds of rakes in yards and the songs of migrating birds,
                    on a southward journey .
Feels nice to go outside and breath,
without the danger of sauteing my lungs.
Yes fall is in the air.
Such a grateful time of year.
Windows go up and air conditioners go off.
One can actually walk barefoot on the side walk.
No longer are the shady parking places in high demand.
No third degree burns from seat belt buckles.
No blisters from the steering wheel, thank God.
AHHH  fall is in the air.

The imagery here is outstanding. I too lived in Texas; in Dallas, Ft Worth, Amarillo and Tyler. I too remember the heat and humidity like it was yesterday. I love fall too. Your poem makes me smile and the joy of this season stands out in your poem. I totally love the line:" Sounds of rakes in yards and the songs of migrating birds." Very visual! Great poem.

A very different story here
We go from spring to fall
before lunch it would appear
and never saw summer at all.
When winter comes with ice and snow
Then we will know without a doubt
the trials we must undergo.
I will only venture out
When I have no choice but go
The shopping trips must still be made
despite the risks of icy roads.
A slowly moving cavalcade
of fools who dare to venture abroad.
But needs must when the devil drives
The store cupboard is almost bare
We need to eat merely to survive
So I drive slowly with great care.
Although I would much rather be
safe beside my fireside
in my armchair comfortably
A cup of coffee by my side.

Lucky down there in the Sun Belt. We have snow in December while you get to walk outside without shoes on.

Otherwise, this is nice work.

I love how fall is different from Texas as it is in the UP of Michigan. Fall to us is the oncoming dread of the first snow, of spotted sunshine that warms the air, but not enough to keep the chill away. Wonderful imagery.
