Chapter 5: Phase Walking and Dragons

A Dragon, young but powerful stood in front of me and all I could do was look at its magnificent form. It had a black color and was relatively big. Its wings were leathery but very big. It looked as if it had just bathed in tar but was shining in the sunlight like a mirror would. Alice gasped and I fought the urge to turn around and run away. Ray laughed and it was difficult to stop myself from shouting at him. But then the Dragon swiped at me and I tried to bring up my blades in time. I was too late and the claw hit my right arm painfully. I was surprised that my arm hadn’t fallen off but then noticed something. The Dragon was playing. It hadn’t intended on killing Alice or me. I started walking towards it letting my blades disappear and held my arm out towards it. It sniffed at my hand and made the same sound Mater had made when I had patted her head. I got closer and patted the Dragons head. It started getting closer and keeping on growling. I was getting bolder and started scratching its chin to find out that it liked that and rubbed its head against my body like a cat did. Alice came closer, after she had recovered from her initial surprise, and said: “It seems like you have found a familiar. And a Dragon at that, you are very lucky. I just wish someone could tell you things about it.” “Wish granted,” I replied and added: “Ray can tell me more about the Dragon than anyone else can.” [True, then I will start. First of all, that is a male dragon and belongs to the Shadow Dragon branch. Those Dragons are balanced in power, speed and magic but when they use their special magic, the power, stealth and speed rises. No Dragon can see their aura and very few can keep up with their speed and power. But if one catches them unaware, which is very rare, one can kill them. They can eat everything without getting bad side effects, are also able to do some fancy things like phase walking.] What’s phase walking?  [A useful skill which lets you travel between the seven layers of the world and so travel around the world faster, slower or safer.] Can a King do that as well? [Only one of the Kings can phase walk; Death.] After my talk I opened my eyes, which I had seemingly closed without noticing and saw Alice and the Dragon in front of me. Alice and the Dragon looked at me curiously, for different reasons I expect, but I just ignored them and started thinking. The Dragon slowly crept up to me and all I thought was; what could be a possible name for the Dragon.  I looked at him closely and saw that his scales had a shade of dark blue. I looked at it and then thought of a name: Onyx. Yes, Onyx, that was the name I gave him without thinking. I hadn’t known then that you had to name your familiars but I just did. Alice walked up to me as well and said: “You need to give him a name.” “Is that usual?” “Yes. We can’t just shout to them something like; blue-black Dragon, sit! It’s just incredibly useless so we name them.” “Ah, understandable, well I think I have a name for him.” “Who says the Dragon is a male?” “Ray does, which should be more than enough as an explanation.” “Indeed, he does know a lot. So, what is his name?” “I’ll call him Onyx. I don’t know why but I just will.” “Onyx is a good name, I like it too. Now we have to go to Mater so that she can bond you two together.” [That won’t be necessary.] Why not? [Because the Kings have their own bonding which is much more complex so that Mater cannot make you two, do it. That is why I am split.] Ah, now you are much more useful. But one question; can I have more than one familiar? [Yes, a King or a Queen can. But others cannot and don’t worry, once you bind to… Onyx, he will notice who your Queen is and won’t attack her.] That is useful for when you’re searching for your queen. [Not really. There once was a King who was killed by his Queen because she was hired to kill him and his familiars wouldn’t stop her.] Yeah, true, that isn’t that useful now. By the way, can I talk to Onyx since I have your Dragonic powers? [Yes you can very good at deductions aren’t you?] Nah, would you mind helping me with the bonding? [That is a part of my job isn’t it? Seriously, get your head in the game.] Wait, how do you know that sentence? I thought you lived thousands of years ago. [Who do you think created that you idiot? Yes, a King, in other words me.] That is logical… god, I know very little about you. [Trust me; no one except for Fate knows everything about me.] I started laughing but caught myself quickly and looked at Onyx. I received words in my head and all I could do was say them out loud: “I am a King, you are my partner, I am chosen by Fate, you are chosen by me but we are of equal rank, I will always be there with you, you will always be with me, I shall accept your thoughts and you shall accept mine, I will always help you and you will help me, I will kill your enemies except if it is your chosen one and you will do the same. This is our contract and you or I cannot break and it will follow us until either of us dies. We are brothers in arms and bond. This is our contract and oath we make to Fate. I accept the consequences. Will you though?” I asked Onyx the question and he replied: “I accept the consequences and will be your brother in arms and bond.” Suddenly, we were both bathed in elements. First wind surrounded us and then it started burning. Then those flames rose and became a Dragon and started burning. The Flames created a black dragon which then was blown away by the wind. Alice was just looking at us and the first thing I asked Onyx was: “You can talk? Why didn’t you say so? It would’ve made things so much easier!” “I was able to talk in the language of the Dragons but the human tongue was accessible to me when the contract started,” he replied. Alice hit me on the back of my head and shouted: “You just went through one of the most amazing contracts and all you can say is: `You can talk? ´?” “Yeah, pretty much.” I replied. Onyx gave out a sound which resembled chuckling and said: “You aren’t very successful in getting a wife.” “Shut up!” I shouted at him. Ray had disappeared from my mind and I didn’t want to disturb him so I asked Onyx: “What do you want to do Onyx?” “I want to go out and fly in the open sky.” “Sure.” Alice grabbed my arm and pulled me towards her: “Are you sure it’s okay? Don’t you think that he would attack the creatures and humans outside?” She hissed at me and I just lamely replied: “Don’t worry; I’m bonded to him so I can stop him if necessary.” Alice reluctantly accepted and I looked for an exit which was big enough for Onyx. Then I suddenly remembered something: “Onyx, can you phase walk yet?” “I can, I understand what you want me to do. See you outside,” he replied and shortly after that he was gone. Alice looked at me questioningly and I started walking towards the staircase. She followed after me and I explained on the way outside: “Shadow Dragons, Onyx is a Shadow Dragon, they can use a skill called phase walking which let them walk through the seven layers of the World. And before you ask, no, I do not know which they are. Ray didn’t tell me and I guess he will once he thinks I should know, like always.” Alice and I walked out of the staircase into the top building and we saw all of the students gathered around one spot. What a pain, now I have to get Onyx out of the crowd and will just draw attention, I thought. I walked through the crowd with Alice close behind me and saw Eric shouting at Onyx. I heard things like: “Stupid reptile… should be an honor to be partnered to me,” and so on. I walked into the small circle the crowd had left and Eric just looked at me and said: “So the blue haired monster is here. What do you want?” “I want to fly with my familiar so go away,” I replied. Eric laughed but I just ignored him and said to Onyx: “Onyx, didn’t you say that you wanted to fly in the sky? Why are you still lying around?” “Well, I said that I’d wait for you two, didn’t I? I am a Dragon of my word,” he replied and I smiled amused. Alice stood behind me and said: “Just let him fly now and then we can handle the crowd.” “Yeah, I also think that’s better,” I replied and told Onyx: “Now you have waited for us, go fly!” Onyx spread his wings and jumped into the air. I gathered the wind around him and propelled him upward so that he could flap his wings freely without any wind blowing at the students around. Onyx flapped his wings and flew straight upwards with his snot to the sun. He then turned so that his shadow looked like a cross on the ground. He then flew in circles and disappeared and then reappeared at a different spot. I could tell that he was very happy and that he liked flying in the sky with winds to read. It was like reading a book to him; some winds were more difficult than others. I started concentrating at the task at hand with Eric and the crowd. Eric was standing and I could tell that he was trying to cast something by the way his aura was gathering in one place (that was an observation I made in the Magic classes by Mr. Jackson),  I quickly muttered a spell which spread his aura again and saw him fail at what he was trying to do. The reason he failed was because if you want to cast magic, you need to gather your aura in one special place, which is different by each spell, and then release it. Eric looked at me and then drew a short sword from inside a cloak which was lying next to him. The short sword was a gladius, a sword used by the Romans. I created my two blades in my hand and was still trying to name them. [Abyss and Void.] What? [Well, you are still trying to name them so name them the Abyss and the Void, the black blade should be called Void and the blue blade should be called Abyss.]  Well, those names do sound epic and fit really well to them. Thanks Ray [Any time Kaizer,] he replied. I then stood in a stance which was nothing like any stance at all. My right hand holding Void was close to my body and so was held ready to stab. My left hand holding Abyss was hanging loosely next to my body and my body itself was standing sideways towards Eric. Eric laughed: “What is that supposed to be?  Is that really a fighting stance?” “Come at me and find out, if you aren’t too scared to get beaten up,” I replied. Eric got mad at me and quickly grabbed under his coat again to pull out a shield. I looked at his weapons in Dragon sight and saw that both of them were covered in 4^th rate enchantments so I just waited for him to charge. The charge came soon and I stabbed with Void at him just as he came in range. He quickly raised his shield and tried to get closer. I concentrated on Void and then I remembered something. A memory which wasn’t mine, I saw a black blade passing through a wall as if the sword or the wall weren’t there. Then I saw a blue blade getting covered in blue flames. Suddenly I was back and only thought: Ray, you are a very fast worker. I thought I heard a reply like: [Of course I am.] But I was too concentrated on the battle.  I suddenly shouted to Eric: “If you don’t want to get hurt, give up!” “As if I’d ever do that, aren’t you just trying to win in a hopeless situation?” He replied and I just sighed Well I tried I thought. I could feel Onyx chuckling but just ignored it and let Void phase walk. Yep, Void was a blade which could phase walk. It passed through the shield and I heard Eric scream. He quickly dropped his shield and jumped back. I let Void phase walk so that it wasn’t in the shield anymore and stood in a different stance now. Now both of the blades were hanging loosely from my body and I was standing with my chest towards Eric. He charged again, gladius, raised above his head and ready to strike down but I just dodged a simple downwards strike and kick him in the stomach so that he was lying on the ground. I just stuck my blades in the ground next to his neck and leaned them towards that. “Are you going to give up or do I have to cut your throat?” I asked. He cried then, genuinely cried and I was surprised at the weakness he had shown. I pulled the blades out of the ground and told him: “Get out of my sight, now! You disgust me with your arrogance.” He scrambled up and grabbed his gladius, shield and cloak and ran towards the school building. The crowd around me was silent and I felt a tense atmosphere ripple through them. Suddenly, Onyx landed right next to me on an open spot and had created enough wind that it could have blown everyone away had I not quickly redirected the wind to blow to the open sky. Onyx chuckled and said: “You need to learn to use your power for necessary things.” “As if you know what’s necessary and what’s not. And why do you sound like an old man?” I replied and asked in return. “Patience my friend, the answers will come to you when the time is right,” he replied just to annoy me. He succeeded and I was so annoyed that I wanted to hit him. Onyx expected a hit so he phase walked and then picked up Alice and flew into the sky. “Ah, what are you doing to me Onyx?” Alice shouted. I quickly gathered the winds from Onyx’s ascend and propelled myself upwards with them. I was in the air on top of Onyx and then I fell. I fell towards Onyx in spread Eagle form but I noticed something, Onyx was relaxed. I remembered that Onyx could phase walk so I quickly swung Abyss and created a vacuum to create wind. I gathered those winds and let myself hover. Onyx tensed up and I reused the winds which made me hover, propel me towards Onyx and I was flying like a bullet. I saw Onyx opening his maw and then I heard his roar. I quickly used the air he had exhaled to close his maw and was on his back. I then swung myself onto one of his legs and located Alice. I quickly climbed over Onyx towards her and then I opened the claw which held Alice. She fell and I followed her. I quickly caught her mid air and then I cast a spell which cushioned our fall. We were lying on the ground next to each other and I breathed heavily. “Why did you do that?” Alice asked. “Because, I don’t want Onyx to accidently drop you somewhere where I can’t catch you so that you die, that’s just a fancy way for me saying that I don’t want you to die and that I was worried,” I replied. Alice chuckled and said: “I guess that I owe you my life once again.” “Please, as long as you don’t die, I will be happy and think that you have repaid your debts,” I replied and then I saw Onyx phase walk next to us back into this layer. He was chuckling and said: “Well Kaizer, now you’re the center of attention.” I looked around and saw a LOT of students. Ah what a pain. I think Onyx did what he did for this… I thought. [Of course he did you idiot. He understood the prejudice they had against you. He loosened it up for you and now the others from your school think that you’re a nice guy because you saved the student council vice president.] He is incredibly smart isn’t he? I replied to Ray’s offensive statement. I looked at the crowd and then just stood up and held my hand out to help Alice up, she took it and then I pulled her up. Then I just walked through the crowd and shouted to Onyx: “Stay in the House of Light please.” And kept on going towards the dormitories and didn’t stop until I was in my room.
