Mystery And Mushrooms

Mystery And Mushrooms

A Poem by Erica Daubert
"

Published in Quail Bell Magazine. A tribute to Super Mario Brothers.

"

I’m creeping through a black and gray dungeon

The music is high pitched, fast

Far too fast and upbeat for my surroundings

Alas, I see my tunnel of escape

I get sucked into a whirlwind of vines

And I rise from the green pipe

A narrow escape from the venus fly trap

That has very little interest in flies

No, this beast with razor sharp teeth

Prefers the sweet taste of human flesh

But my flesh will not be torn, I flee

It breathes fire in its fury of defeat

The world is now colorful, full of life

The sky is bright blue, full of smiling clouds

But I take no chances, no gambles

For this is my last life, my last try

Every step stumbles upon more chaos

Flying turtle shells, boomerangs, bottomless pits

The electronica ringing in my ears now seems more fitting

Painting the illusion that I might be here by choice

In the land of Mystery And Mushrooms

I am in search of my damsel in distress

Held captive by an evil foe in a castle

A castle full of traps, puzzles and death

For a moment I feel invincible, invulnerable to harm

But I quickly lose this high as I near the drawbridge

From the gaping open doorway, I see the obstacles in my path

The demented minions are organized, prepared for my arrival

An eerie breeze chills me to the core of my spine

Monsters aim for me, as if snipers locking their targets

They follow through, they hit, I’m down

Everything is black, it’s over… the castle fades away

I’m back where I started, Mystery And Mushrooms

Unsure if I have it me, too weary to go on

Instead, I decide to nap in the grass that sings sweet songs to me

The damsel will still be in the castle when I awake

I like the rather sweet, and child-like action of the poem. The description of how you phrased and described the adventure was smooth and well written! =)

I never played a game of this kind as a child. This reads like a wonderful fantasy. You did excellent work on this piece.
