Awake

Inspired by the song First Breath After Coma by Explosions in the Sky.

Darkness

All around me,

It is peaceful.

It is quiet.

It has been this way for

A long time.

I haven't kept track of the days,

The months,

Or the years.

All this time

I've heard voices,

People talking about

How I'm dying,

About how I've been asleep

For a long time.

I don't remember my name,

I don't remember how old I am,

Or even my sex.

All I remember is this beautiful darkness.

 

Suddenly,

A light breaks the darkness,

It quietly penetrates my peace.

This light slowly spreads,

And eventually I can make out shapes.

Figures

That stand around me,

They're just blurry silhouettes to me.

Details gradually come into view.

I start to see faces;

They are familiar,

But I can't remember who they are.

 

My eyes wander down,

I am lying in a bed,

But what astonishes me

Are my arms,

My hands.

The limbs I have not seen in

Countless days.

What if I can't remember how to use them?

 

For the first time

Since the darkness engulfed me,

I breathe

I inhale all of the emotions

That the darkness swallowed.

I am alive,

And once this breath escapes me

A tear stains my cheek.

I am alive.
