When God Called You Away

When God Called You Away

A Poem by Chellie
"

A poem I wrote after the passing of my father on March 7th.

"

My heart broke that day

When God called you away

As we stood around you

Tears falling anew

And your final breath left your lips

As I traced your arm with my fingertips

The tears fell from my eyes

And I asked the lord why

I watched your heartbeat slow

As my mind screamed out no

I’m not ready to let you go

Daddy please don’t go

But you went anyway

On that warm winter day

My heart aches for you

But I’m happy for you too

Because you’re free from the pain

Of this world, so mundane

Free to soar through the skies

Watch us with your loving eyes

As you walk with the lord

All your love has been stored

In our hearts you will live

And the lord I forgive

For taking you from me

But now I finally see

The lord had another plan

When he took our only man

I’ll try not to be too sad

But man I miss you Dad

Author's Note

Chellie
My dad passed away on March 7th 2017. He went in on the 3rd for a massive heart attack and unfortunately they couldn't pull him out of the shock and he ended up getting an infection that ultimately took his life. We had to make the impossible decision to let him go home to the lord. It was the hardest thing we ever had to do, and I never would have thought that at 26 I would have to bury my father. But the lord had other plans.
I wrote this tonight as I was feeling very upset after visiting the cemetery where he is buried for the first time since we laid him to rest.

Your writing cuts right through to my soul. It gets me straight in the heart.
I feel this so hard.
I have been in this position and you elegantly and sophisticatedly put into creative words just what it feels like.
You are amazing.

Thank you for entering my contest.

Your use of poetic devices kept me interested all the way through, such as imagery, rhyme, oxymoron/juxtaposition, enjambment and descriptive phrasing

I particularly liked your 'warm winter'.This oxymoron allowed me to feel the eclectic nature of your state. I guess you must have felt such an array of emotion during the writing of this and of course the actual moment itself.

I felt everything you did, and it was just beautiful.

I feel honoured to have read your words and I hope that in time the world will not seem as mundane without your father.

All your love has been stored

This line got to me. Just so much emotion!

Your poem's honest mixing of pain and joy is touching and reflects what human life is, a blend of sadness and joy. Beautiful!

A heartfelt and moving write. You can be consoled to know he loved you and that you loved him and cared for him to the end.... and that now he is at peace..

May you find strength and comfort in the days ahead.
