Splintered Eve

A Poem by Fabian G. Franklin

Between the bitter bite of winter and summer's golden crown

The gentle breath of spring awakens flowers with her kisses

The work soaked week has left men wanting to drown in beer

Out their windows they lean; shirtsleeves and cigarettes, listening

I do not know what songs they sing to the music in their minds

Traffic coughs, car speakers thump, children scream; all in one

Taxi horns and semi brakes mix with the distant barking of a dog

Restaurants fill the evening air with aromas that whet the hunger

Paychecks cashed, heads and hearts grow lighter with the night

Girls come down to the clubs dressed to the teeth and smiling

In glitter and bling, patent leather pants wiggle down the concrete

Side walking their way into the fantasies of anxious onlookers

The shirtsleeves and cigarettes are smoking in anticipation

Hard earned money will be spent as bartenders pick up a tip

The evening is a shattered glass filled with refracted reflections

Thoughts to flavor, passions to savor, plans to endeavor, stir

The cold of winter is forgotten in the sweat on the dance floor

There is fun to be had as the singles mingle to get their fill

Wherever the nectar is sweetest, a gathering of honeybees

Collect the social pollen of a sensual spring’s splintered eve
