Braveheart (The Blood and the Blade)

A Poem by Fabian G. Franklin

“Scots, wha hae wi’ Wallace bled,

Scots, wham Bruce has aften led,

Welcome to your gory bed,

Or to victory!”   Robert Burns 1759-1796

                                      The Blood and the Blade

I pledge my oath of honor

And my life’s blood to freedom

Let men not live in slavery

But know the taste of liberty

If we must die then let us live,

Not one hour in chains

But by the grace of God who gives

Us courage, let us stake our claim

Let us not cower at the word

Of tyrant kings as cowards would

But let them taste the steel of swords

And let the fields run with their blood

Before death’s door I tremble not

But steel shall fill my hand

Then let them know I am a Scot

And I die free in my own land

I shall not be a prisoner of

The foreigner’s manacles

Only Scotland and God above

Have my allegiance and my love

Let the highland bagpipes ring

The tartan kilts and Claymores

Once again of liberty sing

From hills to every Scottish shore

The poet warrior makes his stand

In valor tried and true

From Orkney to Northumberland

As Wallace and the Bruce

Let not be there a traitor named

Among your rank and lot then

But stand and boldly unashamed

Proclaim your love of Scotland!
