Wild Things

Wild Things

A Poem by Fabian G. Franklin
"

We put wild things in cages

But not to tame them

We look upon them

With fear and awe and wonder

We call wild things noble

That will not surrender

To whips and chains

And laws of man

And we admire their

Spirit of freedom

We might train them

Or give them names

But only to our shame

Because a wild thing is never really

Tame

In circus tents we see them

Beside juggling clowns

In pools we feed and keep them;

Sharks and killer whales

Contained yet renowned

We set boundaries that keep them in

Although a wild thing cannot sin

It is quite out of their nature

That they are wild

We call their lust courageous

Men sometimes go beyond boundaries

Prescribed by laws; the laws of man

But not the laws of nature

The laws of nature be damned

Nature has one law:

Survival of the fittest

And that is not enough for man

Man has many laws

And when they are transgressed

Restitution must be made

At the cost of freedom

And crime must be addressed

They roar like lions, these wild of men

With uncivilized proclivity

They use profane expletives

Shunned by society's civility

We do not call them noble, these wild men

We call them criminals

Still, they yearn for freedom

And some are trained

Some jump through hoops

And do what society demands

We call their reform courageous

Freedom shouts to every wild thing;

Hawks and tigers and Tasmanian devils and

Now and then a man may hear

And act courageous

But be careful how you answer men...

We put wild things in cages

intriguing piece of writing...animals in cages, men in cages...but never really tamed...just gawked at for their spirit and wildness----so unfortunate....and is there ever really reform?
i think of Clockwork Orange...at the end....he fooled everybody...there was no real reform....

The sad part. Your words are true. This world love to box-up men and women wild in heart and in spirit. I liked the story and the logic in the words. Thank you Fabian for sharing your amazing words and thoughts.

I suppose there are times when a criminal can be courageous, depending on the law he defies. Still, as you say, their law is that of the jungle. Therefore, I am glad we have cages. Interesting work here.
