He's Different

He's Different

A Poem by Devan McKinley

On a rose’s petal,

He sketched my name.

And that’s one way I know,

That he’s not the same.

You can’t let one person,

Who may have made a mess in your past,

Determine how you see others.

Just what you look for in advance.

He doesn’t act like it’s a burden,

To be fully committed to me.

He doesn’t get what he wants,

Then just up and leaves.

He holds my hand.

And he calls me beautiful.

I offer everything,

Yet he only takes a handful.

The way he looks at me,

Goes farther than the lashes.

Deeper then the soul,

And a broken heart’s ashes.

His simplicity makes me smile.

Yet his complications keep my mind awake.

His hugs make me untouchable,

And his kisses make me shake.

I have much more to learn,

About him and what’s his.

From where he’s been,

To what makes him who he is.
