Pretty Cage

Pretty Cage

A Poem by Judas Hammer
"

When the novelty of LA wore off. LA is a big city don't let TV fool you.

"

Pretty Cage

The other day I woke up and asked myself.

My feelings are on the top shelf.

Of my mind.

Where I am.

Time and space its seems I have defied.

Or is this bright sunshine just a lie?

I walk out further into my New Home.

The new place that I now exist.

The coldest of the east hardly missed.

The newness of this place held me like a fist.

But have I been fooled.

My love for this new found home has now cooled.

I have been hear and hardly left.

The 110 is a lonely Lost Highway.

The Ocean with old whispers mixed among the Sea spray.

“You will never get away”

I took my West Coast journey six years ago.

On my way.

To fabulous LA.

But I am in the pretty harbor city.

Where time and space have no pity.

LA is but a memory.

A smoggy oasis.

With its own reality it does exist.

But to me mentally it seems a million miles away.

The sun chases off by haze.

People float on their boats instead of run.

Where the tourist come in from LA.

You heard me and what I did say.

Tourist from LA.

I have many times tried to escape this beautiful prison.

Where all my fears and anxieties have rises.

Do I fly,

Do I run,

Do I take a bus hostage with a gun.

“Driver get me out of this paradise”

This place is killing me twice.

Has me held like a vice.

I am living the real life Hotel California.

Except Don Henely is a drunk homeless man asking me for a quarter.

He is also a convict in the pretty cage.

Judged and found guilty.

He peers and says “ you will be like me”

I smile, give him a buck.

And say, “that would be just my luck”

And the warm sun beats the back of my neck.

I again feel like I am home.

“You will never get away”
That's a riveting line. The bit about Don Henley made me grin.

You paint the city as both enticing, and the personal letdown it has been for so many. An intriguing write

I find many of my own poems hold this same condemnation of the city around me and many of the people I meet. You use some great turns of phrase and imagery. I really enjoyed this one.

I am assuming an earlier write, I look back at mine and look at the growth we all do , still outstanding.

i quite like this. the experiances and images resonated throughout the piece. in some places, the rhyme felt a little bit forced, so be wary of that. otherwise, well done.
