“You Made Me Love You”

By Cody Williams

His name was Henry. Everyone in the town of Hailstorm, Tennessee knew that. He worked at the local Burger Bar, a local burger joint with a 1950’s theme. There he was in his third year as a waiter there, a job that he first got his junior year in high school and has kept through his freshman year in college.

He was business major with the dream of one day being a music executive for a major record label in Nashville. But none of that mattered to him at the moment. All of it seemed pretty useless. At the present time, he knew that there was only one thing he wanted. The light at the end of the tunnel if you will. What did he want? He wanted what he couldn’t have. I suppose what most young men and even women want.

“Love struck”. That’s what his roommate called him constantly, but he didn’t mind. He didn’t mind one bit because it was true. His roommate often woke him at night stating that he had bee “love talking in his sleep”. He had no way to disprove this so he just accepted it. I guess it was just the way about him. He had the dumb look of a man in love on his face…but this particular day was different.

He had an extra spring in his step that just wasn’t there before. He was wearing his plain gray suit; His hair was black and cut short in the style of a buzz cut.

“Hey Hennery!” A woman named Ginny McMillan said kindly to him. He just raised his arm for a gentle wave and said nothing. She looked at him with that strange look that most women give to men in love. He turned the corner and walked in to Monica’s Flowers, the local flower shop in the center of the town. He reached into his pants pocket and pulled out four crumbled up twenty-dollar bills. He slammed them down on the desk and looked at the cashier.

“A dozen of your finest roses please!” Hennery requested. The woman grabbed the money and shoved them into the cash register. She walked to the back for a moment and left Hennery there with the same goofy lovesick look on his face. When she returned, she had in her hand a bouquet of a dozen red roses. She handed the bouquet to him and smiled.

“Why Hennery, could it be? Are you in love?” She asked him kindly. His completion turned red with a mixture of embarrassment and love. He nodded his head and pointed to a bottle of champagne that was sitting in a cooler next to the counter.

“Can I also get that please?” He asked her.

“Sure sweaty!” She said as she reached over and grabbed the glass bottle. She scanned the barcode on the back of the bottle and then placed it into the traditional brown paper bag. “That will be twenty three dollars honey!” She said. He reached back into his pocket pulling out yet another twenty-dollar bill along with a ten-dollar bill.

“Keep the change!” He said as he gave her a wink and grabbed the bottle of champagne. He walked out of the florist and continued to walk down the street. He began to imagine her sitting there at Burger Bar, where he had asked her to meet him through text message. The Burger Bar was closed today, but being as well liked as he was, the owner, Mr. Little, entrusted him with a key. He unlocked the door just before going out to the florist to allow his beloved to enter. He heart began to pound with anticipation as he closely approached the restaurant. He gabbed hold of the silver handle and opened the door. There she was. Sitting at the corner table. Her long beautiful brown hair and a perfect body. She was dropping dead Georgiou’s. His mouth dropped open. She was dressed to kill. She was wearing a long beautiful black dress held up by spaghetti straps. He walked over to her and sat down.

“Hey Annie!” He said to her with a huge smile on her face.

“Hey Hennery! You wanted to see me?” She asked him with a smile. He reached out and handed her the dozen roses and placed the champagne bottle in the center of the table. “Oh, Hennery, they are beautiful!” She said with joy. He grabbed her by the hand and looked her in the eyes.

“Annie, I think it’s time that we take our relationship to the next level!” He said to her. She bit her bottom lip and looked at him with a surprised expression.

“What do you mean?” She asked him.

“You know, maybe you can be mine!” He suggested. She pulled her hand away from him and leaned in closer.

“Henry, I’ve had time to think about it and I think we would be better off if we just stay friends!” She said to him. The love expression dropped from Henry’s face.

“What?” He asked her in a disappointed tone.

“It’s not you, it’s me. I just don’t think I am ready for a serious relationship! I’m really sorry! I hope we can still stay friends!” She said to him. She stood up from her chair and began to walk away. Henry turned and grabbed her by the arm.

“But, I love you!” He declared. “You made me love you!” He continued. She looked at him confused. “Do you really think you can wear what you wear and look like you look and flirt like you flirt and it mean nothing? You made me love you! And I’m not taking no for an answer!” He shouted angrily.

“Now Henry, calm down!” She tried to reason. He shook his head and grabbed her by the hair dragging her across the floor and into the kitchen. When he got into the kitchen, he looked around for a moment before finally spotting the meat grinder in the corner. He drugs her over to it and turned on the machine. He picked her up and looked her in the eye.

“You made me…” He started before Annie grabbed a skillet and smashed it against his skull. He grabbed his head and let go of her hair. He tried to run away, but he fell to the floor and grabbed her by the ankle before she could. She began to kick him away but it did no good. He grabbed a large butcher’s meat and bone saw. He began sawing away at her foot. She screamed out in pain as he sawed through the tendons and bone. Blood spewed all over the kitchen before her foot was finally disconnected. He picked the foot and shoved it into his jacket pocket.

“Now a pike of you will always be with me!” He said happily. “Now you can’t run away! You made me love you!” He declared again as he reached back down and grabbed her by the hair and pulled her up. “You made me love you and then you broke my heart! Now you must pay!” He shouted as he picked her up and tossed her into the meat grinder. He reached into the pocket and pulled her foot out. He kissed her big toe and smiled satisfied.

Breaking up is never an easy thing ... but in Hailstorm, Tennessee they take it to new heights. That must be quite a thing with the gals there ... “Do you really think you can wear what you wear and look like you look and flirt like you flirt and it mean nothing? " ... The gals there must be constantly wondering what they are saying ... even when they are not saying anything. Goodness ...

Wow. Powerful in its possessive nature and its gross act in the kitchen. I think he lost his mind after the rejection. Excellent...:).......................
